What is a DEXA scan? How body-composition scanning actually works

DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) passes two low-dose X-ray energies through your body and measures how much of each your tissues absorb. Fat, lean soft tissue, and bone mineral each absorb the two energies in different proportions, so the software can separate you into three compartments — and map where each one sits, arm by arm, leg by leg. That directness is why researchers treat DEXA as the reference method for body fat, and why a $45-150 scan tells you more than any gym gadget.

How the measurement works

The machine's X-ray source sweeps under the table while a detector passes above you, recording how much of each energy level made it through at every point. Fat attenuates the beams one way, lean soft tissue another, bone mineral a third — so the software can solve for the amount of each tissue along the beam's path and build a whole-body map from the result.

The three-compartment part matters more than it sounds. Most cheap alternatives — bioelectrical impedance in gym machines and smart scales, skinfold calipers, tape formulas — are two-compartment estimates: they infer "fat vs. everything else" from an electrical signal or a fold of skin plus prediction equations. What a scan session looks like

Unglamorous, honestly:

  1. Book directly. Consumer providers sell scans online with no referral — here's where to find one.
  2. Show up in metal-free athletic clothes. No zippers, underwire, or jewelry — the full prep list is short.
  3. Lie still on your back for 6-11 minutes while the scanner arm passes over you. No tunnel, no enclosure, nothing touches you. BodySpec quotes the whole appointment at under 15 minutes.
  4. Get the report on the spot or by email, usually with a walkthrough.

Why researchers use it

It isn't perfect — no method is — but it's the standard the others get graded against.
