Most body-fat charts on the internet are copies of copies — five tiers, no source, no age adjustment. This page does it differently: the tables below are computed from published NHANES reference data (the CDC's national health survey, which measured body composition with DEXA on thousands of US adults), using the same code that powers our results interpreter. Then the familiar ACE category table gets its say, clearly labeled as the interpretive scale it is.
Short version: body fat is age- and sex-specific. The median US man moves from ~23% body fat at 20 to ~32% by 70; the median woman from ~35% to ~43%. Any chart without an age axis is hiding that.

How to read them: find your age row; the columns show the body-fat % at the 5th, 25th, 50th (median), 75th, and 95th percentile of the US adult population. A 40-year-old man at 24% body fat sits between the 25th and 50th percentiles — leaner than most, not unusually lean. A note on scope: the source paper publishes separate curves by ethnic group with no pooled column; these tables use its most-populated curves, as recommended by the paper (details on the methodology page).

The American Council on Exercise scale is interpretive — fitness-culture tiers, not population data:

Notice the mismatch: ACE's "average" band for men (18-24%) sits below the NHANES median for every age past 30. Both are right — ACE describes a fitness-oriented framing, NHANES describes the population as it is. Which chart you compare against is a choice, and knowing you're making it is the point of this page.
Three honest caveats
- Measurement method moves the number. These references are DEXA-measured. A smart-scale or InBody estimate can differ from DEXA by several points, which can shift you a full column in the table.
- Percentile ≠ prescription. The 50th percentile of a population with rising obesity rates is a description, not a target. Direction and trend beat any single placement.
- Total body fat isn't the whole risk story. Where fat sits matters — visceral fat tracks metabolic risk more tightly than the total percentage, which is why a DEXA report breaks it out separately.

Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy body-fat percentage?
There is no single healthy number — context is sex, age, and what the fat is doing (visceral vs subcutaneous). The ACE fitness categories put 'average' at 18-24% for men and 25-31% for women, while the NHANES population medians run higher (about 23-32% for men and 35-43% for women across adult ages). A percentile tells you where you sit; it doesn't prescribe where you should be.
Why do these charts differ from the chart at my gym?
Most gym charts are the ACE category table or an uncredited variant of it — interpretive tiers, not measurements. The tables on this page are computed from published NHANES reference data collected with DEXA on thousands of US adults, so they describe an actual population. Both are useful; they answer different questions.
Are these charts accurate for athletes?
The NHANES sample is the general US adult population, so a lean athlete will sit at a low percentile by construction — that's the chart working, not failing. For muscularity context, FFMI is the better lens; our FFMI calculator covers it.
My body-fat number came from a smart scale. Can I use these charts?
Loosely. The reference data is DEXA-measured, and consumer BIA devices can read several points off DEXA. Treat a scale-derived percentile as a sketch; a DEXA-derived one as the real placement.
