DEXA scan vs Bod Pod: cost, accuracy, and what each actually measures

Both tests are run by real labs, cost about the same, and hand you a body-fat percentage. The difference is what's behind the number. The Bod Pod calculates one value — body density — and splits you into fat and "everything else." DEXA measures fat, lean tissue, and bone mineral separately, for your whole body and each region of it. In the one large study that ran both on the same people, the Bod Pod read lower body fat than DEXA.
If the price were very different, this would be a harder call. It isn't.
How each test works
Bod Pod is air-displacement plethysmography. You sit in a sealed egg-shaped chamber wearing tight clothing and a swim cap while the machine measures how much air your body displaces. From your volume and weight it computes body density, then an equation converts density into a fat percentage. That's a two-compartment model: fat mass on one side, everything else — muscle, bone, water, organs — lumped together on the other.
DEXA passes two low-dose X-ray energies through you and measures how each tissue attenuates them, resolving fat, lean soft tissue, and bone mineral separately — a three-compartment model. Because it scans you region by region, you also get per-arm, per-leg, and trunk numbers plus a visceral-fat estimate on modern software. The Bod Pod cannot produce any of that: no regional data, no visceral estimate, one whole-body number.
The head-to-head study
The direct comparison worth knowing is Antonio et al. 2019 in the Journal of Exercise and Nutrition: 155 exercise-trained adults (42 men, 113 women) measured on a Bod Pod, an InBody 770, and DEXA.

That middle-row pattern matters if you're lean and training: both field devices underestimated fat and overestimated fat-free mass relative to DEXA. And the last row is the surprise — the $50 lab capsule and the gym's InBody produced statistically indistinguishable numbers in this sample. The authors' own caution: interpret body-composition data in light of the method that produced it, and don't mix methods when tracking change.

Verified prices, since "it varies" helps nobody: UC Berkeley's Recreational Sports Facility posts $40 (students) / $60 (members) / $80 (non-members). Boise State charges $55. Old Dominion charges $50, then $35 for repeats.
Two comfort notes the brochures underplay. The Bod Pod chamber is enclosed — a large window, but still a sealed capsule; if tight spaces bother you, the open DEXA table is the easier sit. And the dress code is real: loose fabric and uncovered hair trap air and skew the volume reading, hence the swim cap.
Which one to book
Book the DEXA if you want data you can act on: regional lean mass, a visceral-fat estimate, and the ability to compare against population percentiles built on the same technology. You're paying roughly Bod Pod money for strictly more information.
The Bod Pod earns its slot in two cases: a university lab near you offers it cheaply and DEXA access is poor, or you want zero ionizing radiation — the Bod Pod uses none, while DEXA's dose, though very low, isn't zero.
Whichever you pick, pick it once and retest on the same device. The Antonio data shows the methods disagree systematically, so switching between them manufactures phantom progress — or phantom backsliding.
A DEXA scan often costs no more than a Bod Pod session — check real prices in your metro before assuming otherwise.

Is a Bod Pod as accurate as a DEXA scan?
In the largest direct comparison — Antonio et al. 2019, 155 exercise-trained adults tested on all three devices — the Bod Pod underestimated percent body fat relative to DEXA, and its readings were statistically indistinguishable from the InBody 770's. The Bod Pod is a legitimate lab method, but it estimates one number (body density) while DEXA measures fat, lean, and bone separately, region by region.
How much does a Bod Pod test cost?
University labs are the most common place to find one, and posted prices cluster between $40 and $80: UC Berkeley's Recreational Sports Facility charges $40 for students, $60 for members, and $80 for non-members; Boise State's Human Performance Lab charges $55; Old Dominion's lab charges $50, with repeat tests at $35.
